Watering the Desert, exhibition Bougie, conceptual artwork

Location: Yuz Museum, China

The term ‘bougie’, slang for bourgeoise, is transliterated into Arabic using the intricate thuluth calligraphy style, the most sophisticated and elegant Arabic script. It is common to use a calligrapher to achieve proportions, however, every letter was extracted from different words and hand-drawn by the artist. To capture the imperfections of a seemingly perfect surface, as part of the theme ‘Hiding in plain sight’.

This creation delves into world’s preoccupation with exclusivity centered around Western cultural influences and approval.
